What is BMI?

Definition

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a person's weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. BMI is an inexpensive and easy screening method for weight category—underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obesity.

Importance

BMI is a useful measurement for most people over 18 years old. It can help determine whether you have a healthy weight for your height. However, it's only one factor in assessing health risks.

Limitations

BMI doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, overall body composition, and racial and sex differences. Athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI but not have excess body fat.
